You have probably seen these pretty edible pearls on cakes and cupcakes if you love baking as much as I do. These cake sprinkles are my favorite. Since I started using Sugar Pearls on my baked goods, I cannot stop. I love decorating and baking with them. Sugar Pearls are beautiful and shiny and make any dessert look elegant. It is expensive to purchase a large number of bottles if you want a wide range of colors. What’s the solution? Make your custom-colored sugar pearls with DIY baking decorating projects!
CUSTOM SUGAR COLORS
We have found that the beautiful white round “pearls,” which are placed on baked goods, can add a touch of elegance to any dessert. When I eat a beautiful cupcake with sugar pearls, I sometimes feel guilty. When I realize that it’s time to start banking, I can get rid of the guilt. The bottles come in a variety of colors. However, it is expensive to purchase all the colors.
It’s great to have so many options, but I don’t want excesses of things that might not be used for a while. Making homemade decorations for baking is not only useful, but it also gives me a sense of pride.
CAN YOU COLORISE SUGAR PEARLS USING FOOD COLORINGS?
You can? Yes, you certainly can! I made some Spring cookies about a month ago and knew exactly what colors I would use as accents. I love pastels, but I wanted to make them “pop” a little more than usual. I was wondering if I could create my colored sugar balls to decorate cupcakes and other baked goods. It’s not fun to be restricted to a limited number of colors.
Materials you’ll require to make your custom sugar pearl colors.
Plastic baggies for sandwiches or snacks.
Paper Towels, one each for the four colors. Folded into quarters.
Small containers for storing separate colored pearls.
Pearls can be dried on foil boats or other flat surfaces.
Mixing custom colors with food coloring
Pour each of your regular colors (Red, Green, Yellow, Blue), and place 2 to 3 drops of food coloring in one of the plastic bags. If you prefer a more pastel color, add 1/2 teaspoon of water and squish the bag until it is blended. Each color should be in its bag. Use enough food coloring to cover the pearls. Do not add any water. If necessary, repeat the second bath with the same bag.
Here is a hint: Don’t throw away a color that you don’t care for if it’s not what you wanted. You might want to add a few drops of the “messed-up color” when you try again to create a color. It can sometimes make a big difference or create a unique color.
Prepare your work surface
This process is a quick one, so you will want to have everything prepared.
Spread out newspaper on the work surface.
Select the colors that you would like to use.
Have a few extra paper towels on hand for any odd little drips.
One Color at a Time
Once you have all your colors ready in bags, it is time to get started!
Create one colored sugar-pearl batch at a given time. Pour your first batch of colored sugar pearls and pour the desired quantity of white pearls into the baggies containing the coloring. Or, for greater control, add the desired amount of white sugar to a small bowl or even the cap of the sugar-pearls bottle.
Then, using the plastic spoon, remove the pearls from the bag after swishing them around to ensure they are all colored. Place the pearls on a paper towel square. It’s okay to have some liquid on your spoon. When you try to remove the pearls from the food coloring, this is what you get.
Roll them gently to the dry areas of the paper towel to remove any excess liquid. You can dry the pearls by transferring them into an aluminum boat or another flat container that you’ve prepared.
If you want classic sugar pearls to maintain their size, shine, and appearance, you should not leave them in food coloring for longer than a few seconds.
Even more colors for decorating cookies and cupcakes
There is a way for you to get a wider range of colors and perhaps darker colors! However, there is a cost. Pearls will be slightly smaller. The more time you leave them in the food color, the more the coating will dissolve, and the shine will wear off. The sugar pearls are still round and beautiful. You will still have many different colored sugar balls, but they won’t have the same sheen. They can be used to decorate cookies, cupcakes, and other baked goods.
